Blink and you’ll miss this gem of a hotel in the Oltrarno down near locals’ haven Piazza Santo Spirito. It’s a former Renaissance palazzo that exudes the style and character of a modern-day Room with a View and, interiors are true to the original building, with a grand entrance hall, pietra-stone stairwell and vast open archways. Head up to the top floor where the relaxed Loggia Bar serves up views from Bellosguardo Tower to the Boboli Gardens and the Basilica di Santo Spirito. The rooftop feels almost Moroccan with its antique lanterns, botanical greenery and rattan seating, but step back outside and you’ll find weekly farmers markets and tiny family-run hole-in-the-wall trattorias that are pure Florence.

Offering an idyllic panorama of the city skyline from its rooftop garden bar, Palazzo Guadagni is a boutique hotel with a historical feel. Set in a 16th-century palace, it features antique furniture, frescoed ceilings and grand fireplaces in some of the rooms.

This romantic midrange hotel overlooking Florence’s liveliest summertime square is legendary – Zeffirelli shot scenes from Tea with Mussolini here. Housed in an artfully revamped Renaissance palace, it has 15 spacious rooms with old-world high ceilings and the occasional fresco or fireplace (decorative today). In summer bartenders serve cocktails on the impossibly romantic loggia terrace with wicker chairs and predictably dreamy views.

Formerly the Pensione Sorelle Bandini, a sweet but rather tired guesthouse in a C.16th Renaissance palace run by nuns, Palazzo Guadagni is today reborn as a simple three star in Piazza Santo Spirito, packing in both historical charm and modern touches aplenty.

There are just 16 spacious, classic yet no frills rooms, many with high vaulted or frescoed ceilings, marble floors, fireplaces and bathrooms with painted tiles, plus all feature satellite TV, minibar and complimentary WiFi – so it’s really the perfect blend of character and function.

More good news: there’s an elevator so you needn’t haul your Globe-Trotter and shopping bags to the top floor room you’ve requested – an airy rooftop loggia with expansive views of old Florence and the hills in the distance, just the place to rest your lalls with a quiet aperitivo after trudging the corridors of the Uffizi.

This small, quiet hotel has a prime location in the heart of the Oltrarno, with a “Room with a View” atmosphere along with modern-day amenities. The USP is the magnificent wrap-around loggia, surely one of the most romantic spots for a post-sightseeing prosecco in the city.

This home-from-home oozes old-fashioned charm by the shedload. It’s a modern day « Room with a View » sort of place where comfort has not detracted from atmosphere. The hotel occupy the upper floors of imposing Renaissance Palazzo Guadagni, which come complete with a vast arched doorway, magnificent entrance hall and pietra serena stone staircase. Once inside the hotel there are frescos, wonderful old terrazzo or cotto floors, molded ceilings and an air of tasteful gentility. Antiques, pictures and gilded mirrors from the owner’s family vaults are scattered throughout.

Step into this 16th-century property and you could be mistaken for thinking you’ve got the wrong place – the hotel entrance is on the fourth floor. The best rooms, with frescoed ceilings, are on this level (the fifth floor has lower ceilings). All the traditional style, with antique wooden furniture and tiled bathrooms.

The main draw, however, is the view from the loggia overlooking Santo Spirito Square. With its wicker tables and chairs, as well as hurricane lamps, it’s perfect for a sundowner or nightcap.

Palazzo Guadagni Hotel is set in a 16th-century building in a quiet square 5 minutes’ walk from the Ponte Vecchio. It has a roof garden with lovely views. A recent refurb hasn’t destroyed the old-world charm of this hotel, housed on the top floor of a magnificent 16th century palazzo. Most of its 15 comfortable, pastel-hued rooms have wonderful rooftop views and are furnished with antiques. Its best feature is the wraparound loggia which overlooks lively Piazza Santo Spirito: I can’t think of a better place for a sundowner than right here!

Place of great charm, chosen as a location by Zeffirelli for his Te with Mussolini and, more than recently, by Nina di Majo for the comedy Matrimoni and other disasters played by Margherita Buy, Palazzo Guadagni remains one of the most central yet discrete corners of the city of lily. Point of privileged view, a treasure chest full of history and an ideal starting point for a special visit to the city.

The Loggia Roof Bar at Hotel Palazzo Guadagni is a perfect place to perceive the voices from the plaza and streets below, to gaze at the rooftops of the historical buildings in Florence and to enjoy the beautiful view of the Florentine Hills while sipping a Tuscan wine. You don’t need more than this for a truly harmonious experience.
